Dessert of the Day: Ocean Blue Birthday Cake

For Phil's birthday this weekend I made him a cake using this recipe.
He's not a big dessert lover - shocking I know - so I tried to choose a basic cake recipe that wouldn't be overly sweet.
I was thrilled to see that the bottom of the cake turned out perfectly - probably one of the few that has worked out this well and had to take a photo of the bottom.
Woo-hoo!!
The icing was a pretty simple butter icing recipe my mom uses, to which I added a ton of blue food colouring.  I don't know what was going on with me and the icing but at one point it was a frickin' disaster scene.
Luckily a wet piece of paper towel did the trick of cleaning up the bottom edge of the plate.
There was even a bunch on the bottom of the plate. . .
The finished cake.
I tried to make the blue icing look like waves, and picked up these little toys from the local dollar store to complete the look.  I know I need some cake decorating lessons (the above picture proves that for sure) but Phil loved it and so it did the trick.  The overall cake wasn't fluffy but was a hit after dinner and didn't taste overly sweet.
So, overall a winner!
Yay!
